Meine Forschung konzentriert sich auf Fluidbewegungen und Fluid-Gesteins-Wechselwirkungsprozesse in Orogenen (z. B. Schottland), Subduktionszonen (z. B. Kykladen in Griechenland) und Grabensystemen (z. B. Island, Ostafrikanischer Grabenbruch). Modernste Analysetechniken (LA-ICP-MS, ICP-OES, IC, hohe TC/EA, IRMS, SIMS) werden eingesetzt, um chemische Veränderungen und stabile Isotopenverhältnisse in Gesteinen, Mineralen und Wässer aus aktiven geothermischen und hydrothermalen Systemen zu messen. Vergleiche der erhaltenen petrologischen und geochemischen Daten mit Ergebnissen aus Modellierung thermodynamischer Reaktionspfade mithilfe von Softwareprogrammen wie PhreeqC oder GEMS helfen dabei, den Ursprung von Fluiden, sowie die Prozesse, die zur (Re-)Mobilisierung von Elementen in der Kruste führen, zu entschlüsseln und globale chemische Stoffkreisläufe zu berechnen.
Insbesondere die Rolle von Schwefel wird dabei untersucht, der als wichtiger Ligand die Bildung stabiler Metall-Ligand-Komplexe mit einer Vielzahl verschiedener (kritischer) Metalle in Krustenfluiden eingehen kann und so viele globale (natürliche und anthropogene) Stoffkreisläufe in der Kruste beeinflusst. Schwefelisotopenverhältnisse von Mineralien und Gesteinen in Verbindung mit Metall- und Spurenelementkonzentrationen sind wertvolle Indikatoren, die dabei helfen, den Ursprung von S im System zu erkennen und den Entstehungsmechanismus (z. B. Phasentrennung, Fluidmischung, Redoxreaktionen) zu untersuchen, der zur Anreicherung von Schwefel und damit einhergehende Metallanreicherungen in der Erdkruste führen.
